5 Reasons You Should Get Maternity Photos

I will say that when I found out I was pregnant with my firstborn, the first thing that came to mind was not a maternity photo session at all. In fact, I didn’t really think about it until I was about 8 months along and at that point, I decided I didn't want the hassle. However, now I regret it. I never had a maternity session with either of my pregnancies and I find myself regretting it. I think about it often, too. And that if I have a third child, I want to make sure I do a maternity session with them. So why should you get one?

Believe it or not, you’re going to miss your bump!

From the moment you see the positive on that pregnancy test, you dream about the very moment in which you get to hold your newborn. While at first, it feels like time is just inching by and you find yourself saying, “I am just so over this pregnancy.”

You know what I’m talking about - the aching back, the sleepless nights, and let’s not forget that frequent heartburn that just gives you no reprieve. And of course, you tell all your family and friends, “There’s NO way I’m going to miss this.”

Let’s face it, pregnancy is hard but it’s also magical too. We feel so connected to this life we are growing inside of us. You feel their every hiccup, every kick, and every headbutt to your ribs. And once it’s over and done with, you’ll find yourself wandering down memory lane and remembering all those baby kicks. You’ll touch your belly and smile.

So, it’s especially important to capture these moments because you won’t be pregnant forever, and your pregnancy will fly by quicker than you anticipated.

Having maternity photos to look back on will be a standing reminder of that magical time when new life was gestating inside your belly. When you see those beautiful pictures of yourself, you will always smile.

It's a chance to celebrate your pregnancy journey!

Pregnancy may not be a phase of your life you enjoy, especially in the last few months. As your body grows larger, you may not want any photos of yourself taken and wouldn’t want to share images with friends and family. It can be a challenge watching your body change so much, and it can also be easy to forget just how miraculous and incredible pregnancy really is. A maternity photo session allows you to focus on the new life your body is working so hard to create, instead of the way you look and can remind you of the excitement and joy that comes with bringing your child into the world.

You’re creating new life within you. You feel connected to that life; you feel everything from the kicks to the headbutts in the ribs. Capturing these moments allows you to remember all of that.

A great way to mark this moment in your family’s growth!

I’m a firm believer that you can never have too many photos of your family. So much of life passes by in a blur, and we often forget more than we remember. Whether this is your first child or your fourth, your pregnancy is a great time to get some family photos with not just you and your partner, but your other children as well. If you take time to do photo sessions on a regular basis, you can chart the growth of your family over the years—something your future self and your children will definitely be thankful for.

Like I mentioned earlier, I regret not having maternity photos taken of either of my pregnancies. I wish I could look back at something tangible to mark my family’s growth but I can’t.

To take time to bond with your partner!

One of the coolest things about maternity sessions is the interactions between couples as they celebrate the new life they’ve created. Your maternity photoshoot gives you and your partner a chance to reflect on the life you’ve built together and how much has changed in your relationship since the beginning. Plus, maternity images are a great way to mark a major shift in the life of your family and in who you both are as you transition to parenthood.

Many fathers experience a delay in bonding with their child when they’re in utero. They don’t experience pregnancy in the same way as their spouse, so it can be harder for them to build an attachment to their infant until it is born.

They often don’t build a connection to their newborn until they’re able to interact with it. That’s completely different from mothers – they often experience a deep attachment to the baby while pregnant.

And lastly but not least, to get images worth displaying!

A lot of people have their wedding photos hanging on the walls of their home, but imagine having images on your walls from every stage in your family’s growth—from marriage to your first child all the way down to when you become grandparents. Maternity photos capture a moment in time that’s just as important as your wedding day. You’re welcoming a new child into your lives and your home—that’s huge! It’s definitely a moment that deserves professional photography, just like your wedding day.

You’re going to be shocked at how beautiful you look! You’ve probably heard the phrases “You’re glowing!” or “Pregnancy suits you!” from various people throughout your pregnancy. Between the cankles, the urge to eat everything in sight, and the fact that none of your clothes fit anymore, pregnancy doesn’t always make you feel beautiful.

From the day your infant is placed in your arms, time starts to go by fast!

One minute a nurse is teaching you how to swaddle, and the next, you’re chasing a toddler through the aisles at Target.

You’re going to miss the calm days of pregnancy where you didn’t have to keep tabs on the diaper bag or wipes every time you head to the store. You’ll miss that your baby bump couldn’t talk back to you when you get into an argument with your toddler over whether they should eat a popsicle for every meal.

At the end of the day, getting maternity photos done is worth every penny and memory.
