One of the number one things I get asked is...
"When is the best time of the day to take our portraits?" Some have heard that you should shoot at sunrise or sunset, some have heard that a cloudy day is best, and still, some have heard other advice.
And I am here to tell you that ideally the best time of day to take any kind of portraits - family, maternity, couples - is that hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset. I absolutely love that Golden Hour glow that these time frames give photos. It gives that magical glow to an already beautiful image. But that said, a cloudy day it just as workable as Golden Hour.
What is golden hour?
Golden hour is a time of day when the sun is low in the sky. It happens twice a day, at sunrise and at sunset. Despite the name, it can last longer than an hour depending on where you are on the earth and what time of year it is. Because the sun is low in the sky, shadows are softer, and the angles and length are more flattering. As the name implies, the warm colors are more prominent at this time of day, which gives a flattering look to portraits.
People look best when the shadows on their faces are soft and diffused, and golden hour photos achieve this without much effort or extra equipment. The warm light is also universally flattering, so your photos will look as lovely as you are!
That Lens Flare...
I absolutely love that magical factor that the sun adds to a photo with the lens flare. When you look at a photo that was taken during Golden Hour and see that lens flare from the sun, it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy. I simply can't stop smiling. And I obviously want that for my clients as well.
But don't fret if the day we book for your session the sun doesn't want to come out. We can achieve magical photos with cloudy days as well! That is the magic of a photographer after all! We spent countless hours after the session hand-editing your photos to ensure they come out magical and breathtaking.
